What our students say

I have not had any formal English classes in a long time and these have been a great help towards improving my pronunciation. I can affirm that my objective has been more than satisfied.

Communication is essential, and SLA students often find themselves speaking more during meetings, writing more emails, understanding more in the media, becoming more confident on the telephone, and connecting more with their communities.

SLA teaches intermediate through advanced English as a Second Language (ESL) skills that other schools often don't address. SLA's students benefit from this curriculum focus by becoming easier to understand, comprehending more, becoming more accurate in English, and increasing their confidence in every aspect of their English communication.

Students come to SLA for many types of issues:

  • I am too advanced to take ESL classes at a community college.
  • I know people need to ask me to repeat myself, but I don't know why what I said wasn't understood.
  • I can write an email to communicate a basic idea, but I don't know how to convey the tone I wish to. I don't know if my emails are polite or rude.
  • I can make a presentation in English, but may rely too heavily on digital presentation slides or written notes.
  • It is frequently the little grammar words (a/an, the, to, by, for, etc) that I don't always use accurately.
  • I haven't studies verb tenses in a long time and I no longer remember exactly how to use them.
  • I've never had an intermediate or advanced class. Most of my English learning has happened by listening to people around me.
  • I worry that my strong accent holds me back in the workplace.
